There are dozens of studies that link too much sitting with too many health problems. In this short video, “Are You Sitting Too Much?” there are tons of stats and research that show just how dangerous sitting is, even if you do work out.

Now, to the sitting statistics. Their video about the dangers of sitting had a lot of info, so here are the top sitting stats so you don’t have to keep pausing and writing them down (like we did).

  • You lose about 1 calorie a minute while sitting
  • After sitting for 3 hours, you get a 50% drop in artery dilation
  • After 2 weeks of sitting for more than 6 hours a day =
    • increase in LDL (bad cholesterol)
    • muscles break down
    • less blood goes to the heart
    • decrease in your enzymes that break down fat
  • After a year of sitting for more than 6 hours a day =
    • women lose upwards of 1% in bone mass per year
  • After 10-20 years of sitting for more than 6 hours a day =
    • lose up to 7 years of life with no medical issues
    • 64% increase in chance of death from heart disease
    • 30% increase in chance of death from prostate or breast cancer
  • Exercise doesn’t counter effect the negative effects of sitting too much. Once you stop working out, deterioration starts again based on the amount of time you sit
  • Sitting for a maximum of 3 hours a day could raise the average lifespan by 2 years
